Achim Burkart, Consul General, German Consulate, Bengaluru, has said that Germany is looking for partnership with Karnataka. The country is eager to work with the Indian state on green and renewable energy projects.

Burkart established that Karnataka boasts of the highest share of renewable energy mix. This fact makes it an ideal destination for exploring projects in renewable energy. He said that as of November 2022, Karnataka employed 66% of its power from renewable sources. As per Germany’s Consul General, this is an upward push from 13% back in 2016. He remarked, “Karnataka is the ideal place for renewable energy while hydrogen is one space the Union government is very keen on and has a clear strategy. Germany is also very keen on this space.’‘  Achim Burkart was speaking at an event in connection with EMO Hannover, which is the world’s leading trade fair for production technology. The trade fair is slated to be held in Hannover on September 18 to 23, 2023.

The Consul General added that when it comes to research and development and introducing ideas in the renewable energy segment, Bengaluru enjoys a good position. As a hub of Information Technology as well as engineering, the city of Bengaluru is poised to play a significant role in scripting India’s renewable story.

India-Germany Alliance

Notably, India and Germany are strengthening their bilateral ties in renewable energy.

In a move towards fulfilling  the goal of decarbonizing their economies, India and Germany recently signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a long-term collaboration focusing on hydrogen and clean energy technologies. The LoI was signed between the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE).

India and Germany have been strengthening partnership in renewable energy. In a recent development, Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited India. In talks held between India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the German Chancellor, the subject of green hydrogen assumed significance as did exchange of technologies to enable energy transition.

Germany had proposed to fund India’s energy transition projects with €1 billion. The projects are to be executed all over the country under a bilateral partnership between the two countries on green and sustainable development.

As per discussions held between India and Germany, the funding will pave the way for over 20 projects in India.
