Germany has concluded its latest round of the 400 MW solar tender that comes with storage. The Federal Network Agency shortlisted 408 MW worth of projects.

Interestingly, this round of the innovation tender attracted unprecedented interest from the bidders. The round saw a total of 53 bids with a cumulative capacity of 779 MW. Of the bid received, 32 proposals have been shortlisted for state funding.

Bidding Tariffs

The tariffs of the bids that emerged successful varied from 7.76 cents per kilowatt hour (ct/kWh) to 8.78 ct/kWh. The average volume-weighted award price in this round is 8.33 ct/kWh. The volume-weighted average price as well as the respective maximum value are 1.8 ct/kWh higher than the bidding tariffs seen for the ground-mounted solar parks tender in July tender.

A majority of the projects were won by the state of Bavaria, having bagged 19 projects and boasting a total capacity of 258 MW.

21 winning with 175 MW cumulative capacity are for projects related to solar installations along motorways and railways.

This round of the tender is a sharp contrast to the round held earlier when against the target of 400 MW, a mere three bids were received with an aggregate capacity of just 84 MW.

Klaus Mueller, President of the Federal Network Agency stated, “After two weak rounds, the innovation tender has regained momentum. The almost double oversubscription demonstrates the dynamic potential of renewables. Now it is important to maintain the current level of project developments.”

The next innovation auction will close for bids on 1 May 2024.

Another tender bidding for ground-mounted solar projects in Germany, with the deadline of November 1 for an allocation of 890 MW for solar parks, garnered little interest. Only 117 proposals, with a combined capacity of 677 MW were received.

Solar plus storage projects are gaining momentum in Germany. Some recent projects announced include the Garzweiler Mine Project by RWE, a Statkraft project  boasting peak output of 47 MW among a slew of others.
