GE Renewable Energy has announced the opening of a new renewable hybrids factory in Vallam, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The site employs 250 employees, including 20 women.

“As the industry and customers’ demand dispatchable renewable energy to navigate the energy transition, the need for hybrid systems is increasing exponentially. This facility that has been set up following the lean principles of reducing waste and improving productivity and is well suited to strengthen GE’s place in the hybrids space,” said Prakash Chandra, Renewable Hybrids CEO, GE Renewable Energy.

The Chennai factory will make the flexinverter and flexreservoir products from GE’s newly-launched flex portfolio. “The site is centrally located and connected to national highways, airports, and seaports and the factory will be able to fully produce and integrate systems at the site, which reduces the time taken at site and helps create more value for customers,” the company said in a statement.

GE Renewable’s flex portfolio includes the following:

  • The FLEXIQ is a digital platform that provides design, operation and fleet management solutions to enable grid compliance and maximize lifetime customer value.
  • The FLEXRESERVOIR is a system-integrated battery energy storage and power electronics solution for multiple configurations and market applications.
  • The FLEXINVERTER is a containerized solution that delivers a reliable, cost-effective, plug & play, factory integrated power conversion platform for utility scale solar and storage applications.

Last month, Paris-based GE Renewable announced that it will supply, install, and commission 37 wind turbines for a 99.90-megawatt (MW) wind power project in Gujarat, managed by Indian renewable energy group Continuum Green Energy, to provide local businesses and consumers with clean energy.

GE’s project will leverage its significant local footprint in India with product design taking place primarily at the company’s Bengaluru center, blades being manufactured in its plants in Vadodara and assembly occurring at its manufacturing facility in Pune, the company had said in January.
