France Becomes Top Net Power Exporter of Europe EU Action Plan Proposes 40% Investment In Electricity Grids Till 2030

A recent report by EnAppSys, an energy data consultancy provider, indicates that France became the largest net power exporter of Europe, surpassing Sweden. On the other hand, Germany became a net importer from a net exporter of power during the first half of this year.

The report showcases the recent progress in France’s position in the international market from an importer to an exporter. The data shared by EnAppSys on the share of export and import made in the first six months this year indicates that France’s total value of exports amounted to 17.6 TWh. Its majority of power flew to Great Britian (8TWh) and Italy (9 TWh).

In response to this recent development, the director of Jean-Paul-Harreman of EnAppSys attributed this development of an increase in exports by France to the increased availability of the country’s nuclear assets, which helped them change the French energy balance to export positive.

“The cause for the increase of exports in France versus the previous year was an increased availability of the country’s nuclear assets. Although availability is still 10-15% lower than normal, the increase in capacity of between 5 and 10 GW versus last year helped to flip the French energy balance to export again,” Jean said.

Based on the shared report, the energy portal Eu has attributed the growth in export increase to energy trading. The report elaborates that based on the price difference and the surplus energy sharing between these countries, cheaper generation became available in the French market. Additionally, the report highlights the surge of energy export in France to a boost in hydropower production due to heavy rain.

Further, the report accredits the presence of an efficient trading system in place to enable easy trading to high energy demand in neighbouring European countries.
