As per the Finnish Wind Energy Association (FWPA), the wind power capacity of Finland witnessed a 75% surge in 2022. Of this, nearly half of it was owned by Finland domestically.

“Wind power is now increasing our country’s energy self-sufficiency at a really good pace – just when new and affordable electricity production is most needed,” stated Anni Mikkonen, CEO of the FWPA.

The reader may be aware that following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, there have been energy shortages. However, most European nations dealt with the challenge by accelerating their transition to renewable energy. Finland is one such country. With the paucity of fuel, short term relaxations have also been introduces in climate measures. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that the growth of renewable power capacity growth will increase to double over the span of the next five years.

2022- Landmark year for Finnish wind industry

Last year, 427 new turbines were set into motion by Finland. With these additions, there was major impetus to wind power with an addition of 2,430 MW of capacity. Since 1 MW can power roughly 1000 households, with 2430 MW capacity into operation, over 2.4 million homes can be powered up.

As of now, Finland boasts of 1,393 wind turbines. Together, these produced a power of 5,677 MW. This power is enough to provide power to roughly estimated 5.5 million homes in Finland, whose population is 5.5 million.

In the country, it is anticipated that the capacity of wind power will be accelerated by close to 1,000 MW every year in the next few years. Wind energy may account for a minimum of 28 per cent of the country’s electricity. This is a surge of almost 10 per cent when compared to the figures in 2021.
