EVI Technologies, IIT Delhi to Develop Battery Swapping System (BXS) for EVs

EVI Technologies, IIT Delhi to Develop Battery Swapping System (BXS) for EVs

EVI Technologies (EVIT) has announced that  it has developed Battery Xchange System (BXS) for two and three-wheeler electric vehicles under the Sustainable E-Mobility vertical of Delhi Research Implementation and Innovation (DRIIV), IIT Delhi. The BXS is being installed at IIT Delhi by EVI Technologies as a concept designed for electric three-wheelers to be used in campus only.

BXS enables the EV user to swap the full or partially discharged battery with a fully charged battery within 2 minutes. Presently, the developed BXS is being set up at the IIT Delhi campus for three-wheeler e-rickshaws to study in depth the challenges and user behavior towards the concept of battery swapping.

EVI Technologies said that the in-process concept design of BXS will soon be kicked off by May 2022 and will help in production changes as per the long-awaited government policy allied to EV battery swapping stations in India which has recently been released by Niti Ayog on the 20th of April for comments.

The manufacturing and assembling of the BXS will be taken up later based on standardization of two and three-wheeler EV batteries. EVI Technologies stated that BXS enables the EV user to book a fully charged battery by locating the nearest xchange station using the mobile/web application.

Shipra Misra, CEO DRIIV, said, “E-mobility is a strategic focus area of DRIIV (Delhi S&T cluster, an initiative of the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India) and through forging such industry-academia partnerships, we are working towards addressing battery and charging infrastructure related challenges to deliver on the National Electric Mobility Mission”.

Professor BK Panigrahi, Head – CART, IIT Delhi and the PI of the Sustainable e-mobility theme, commented to BXS, “The product concept is in line with the user requirements, but the only thing yet to be finalized is the battery standardization, on which the country’s think tanks are working to finalize it.”

Rahul Soni, Head-Projects, EVI Technologies, said, “The USP of our product is that the algorithm has been written in such a distinct way that different types of batteries (i.e. different chemistry based batteries) can be charged using our solution. EV manufacturers have not given any exact standards for the batteries, and until, the battery swapping policy will not be standardized by the government as per the size for electric two and three-wheelers there is no use of introducing it in the open market.”
