As the world realises the significance of green hydrogen in the transition towards a cleaner world and decarbonisation, more and more corporations are looking to power their operations with it. Airbus, the multinational aerospace European giant is the most recent to jump onto the bandwagon. Airbus has set sights on procuring Green Hydrogen from India, Australia and Latin America. This is an effort towards its decarbonisation plans.

Presently, Airbus is looking to come up with a hydrogen-powered fuel cell engine. This is specifically for its zero-emission aircraft to be operational by year 2035. Airbus is on an ambitious hydrogen drive as It has also entered into a partnership agreement with HyPort towards the establishment of a low-carbon hydrogen production along with the distribution station at France’s Toulouse-Blagnac airport. This new project will be set in motion next year and will boast of production capacity of close to 500 kilograms everyday. The said capacity The hydrogen station at the Toulouse-Blagnac airport is slated to enter into service in early 2023. It will have a capacity to produce around 400 kilograms of hydrogen per day. This is sufficient to fuel about 50 ground transportation vehicles.

It was only a few days ago that Airbus also joined hands with Neste- a renowned producer of renewable fuels, to pave the way for the acceleration of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Lately, there has been increased focus in the aviation sector to find the replacement of fossil fuel. Thus, SAFs, such as biofuels, synthetic fuels and hydrogen are gaining prominence.

India’s Hydrogen Market

One of the major reasons that Airbus is looking to source hydrogen from India is that it believes that the Indian and Latin American markets are poised to become lucrative supply hubs, given the cost of the production of renewable energy in these countries.

India has set itself a goal of 500 GW by 2030- a market size large enough to attract investors and manufacturers to establish an increasing number of manufacturing facilities in India.
