Electrolux, SolarizEgypt to Cooperate In Solar Sector in Egypt

World’s leading manufacturer and supplier of electrical appliances, Electrolux has announced  entering into an agreement with SolarizEgypt for the establishment of a solar power plant at its factory. Electrolux said that the renewable energy will be utilized to produce washing machines, refrigerators, Delta electric water heaters, and stoves.

As per the official statement, the pact consists of different phases. The first phase entails installation of 1.5 MW of electricity, including 1 MW in the Delta factory, which manufactures refrigerators and washing machines, and 0.5 MW in the stoves factory. Electrolux aspires to have 3 MW capacity in the second phase. This is said to be in line with the vision of Electrolux to achieve zero carbon emissions from its operations by the end of this decade.

SolarizEgypt and Electrolux have joined hands for a period of 25 years to safely operate and decarbonize the electrical system of Egypt.

Maysam El Hennawy, CEO, Electrolux Egypt, said, “Under this agreement, Electrolux will continue to support Egypt’s Vision 2030, which encourages the use of renewable energy sources, and environmental sustainability measures. Despite the initial high costs of investing in the solar power plants, the government is projected to subsidize it in the future, and it will reduce the company’s consumption by around 17%.”

Ashraf El Bahwash, Head of the Manufacturing Operations at Electrolux in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, said that Electrolux will implement sustainability factors like plastic replacements, zero landfill, carbon dioxide emission, water treatment, scrap recycle, light sensors for energy saving, returnable package recycle and so on. He added that Electrolux will work with its suppliers in realising the same sustainability target to step up the renewable energy ambitions of Egypt. He held that the stove factory of Electrolux is already known as a zero waste generating facility worldwide.

He also mentioned that SolarizEgypt has access to its in-depth industry knowledge that will help Electrolux in pursuing its aims and goals.

Yassin Abdel Ghaffar, Founder and Managing Director at SolarizEgypt, said, “Despite the fact that we have ongoing projects that exceed 50 megawatts, we are pleased with our agreement with Electrolux, which combines the use of renewable energy, energy-saving products, and sustainable practices.”

“We are also proud to be a part of this initiative before the start of the activities of the Climate Conference (COP27), which will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, to discuss the global environmental agenda, and the future steps towards achieving sustainable development,” added Ghaffar.

The Outcome

Under the new pact, 588 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide will be offset every year and half a megawatt solar power station will come up on a site of 6,500 sq mtrs. Another solar power plant will produce 1,680 MWh of electricity annually and it will be constructed in the Delta factory. This project will also offset carbon dioxide emissions worth 1,136 metric tonnes every year.
