Electric Tugs Set to be Built by Defence Shipyard Firm Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd - a defence shipyard firm has joined hands with three entities for the development of green electric tugs.

GRSE has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Shift Clean Energy, Seatech Solutions and the American Bureau of Shipping towards this initiative. The firms will look into the development of green electric tugs E-VOLT 50 which will help bring down carbon emissions, augment efficiency of operations while also promising environmental sustainability in the tugboat industry.

The shipyard firm will construct the platform basis the design by Seatech while Shift Clean Energy will offer energy storage. ABS will make sure that the design and construction follow the regulatory standards.

In the past too, Garden Reach has taken up several initiatives for the construction of green vessels. Presently, the shipyard is in the process of making a zero-emission electric ferry for the West Bengal Government, which will boast a capacity of 150 passengers. Upon commissioning, the electric ferry will operate along the Hooghly and other significant rivers.

India has set its sights on becoming the global hub for green shipbuilding by 2030. Towards this goal, the country has also introduced the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP). In a noteworthy effort that encourages employing renewable energy for electric boats, the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and MPUVNL (Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd)- a firm owned by the Government of Madhya Pradesh, joined hands for the classification and certification of solar-electric boats a few months back.
