Denmark Helps India Plan Multiple Offshore Wind Zones Suzlon Expects To Add 7 GW Of New Capacity In FY25

The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) and India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) have published an offshore wind plan for 15 locations in India. The initiative is  a part of the Centre of Excellence for Offshore Wind and Renewable Energy, a joint initiative by the two countries.

The report  is based on Denmark’s approach to maritime spatial planning for offshore wind. The plan published takes a look at 14 zones that have been selected off the Tamil Nadu and one off the coast of Gujarat.

The plan that was presented offers proposals to the draft tender document that the MNRE released in November this. including further details on the exact locations of the first 4 GW in Tamil Nadu. The study provides an insight into the precise locations of the first 4 GW plant to come up in Tamil Nadu.

“The joint projects on maritime spatial planning and port infrastructure have provided significant inputs for the draft tender document that is currently under stakeholder consultation as well as the upcoming tenders for offshore wind in India. The Danish approach and experience has been very helpful to advance this and has brought great value to take us forward and reach 30 GW by 2030,” Dinesh Jagdale, Joint Secretary for the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, stated.

The said port infrastructure mentioned by the minister explores the possibilities and viability of developing the ports that already exist in the States of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu to augment nearly 30 GW of offshore wind development with the use of wind turbines with capacity of over 15 MW.

Freddy Svane, Ambassador of Denmark to India, spoke about the cooperation between India and Denmark cooperation on energy, “The Indian-Danish collaboration on energy has taken remarkable steps and is a key contributor to the Green Strategic Partnership between India and Denmark. Offshore wind will be the next step in India’s green transition and with a clear and strong mandate from our two countries, India and Denmark are leading this green energy transition.“

The Green Strategic Partnership is a collaboration between the two countries which pave the way for them to work together to support green growth while also creating jobs, strengthening cooperation on addressing global challenges and opportunities. The Indo-Danish partnership is also dedicated to the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
