Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena have today rolled out 400 new electric buses in the capital city. The addition of the buses will augment the number of electric buses to 800 in Delhi. This makes it the city with the largest number of electric buses in the country.

The government of Delhi has placed orders for 1,500 electric buses. Of these, 921 electric buses have got subsidies under FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles) scheme. The operational cost for these buses is pegged at INR 4,091 crores in a year.

The rest of the 579 buses will be bought and operated by the government of Delhi government. As per FAME subsidies, 90 per cent of the total cost is to be covered by the Delhi government and the rest by the central government.

Delhi claims a fleet size of 7,135 buses, with 4,088 buses under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and 3,047 under DIMTS (Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System).

Last year, the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) announced that it would be purchasing new electric buses from Tata Motors. Tata Motors added that DTC has signed a definitive agreement with its fully owned subsidiary, TML CV Mobility Solutions Ltd. for operation of 1500 electric buses in New Delhi. As part of the agreement, Tata Motors will supply, operate and maintain 1500 units of 12-metre low-floor air-conditioned electric buses for a period 12 years.
