The religious institutions and pilgrim sites are increasingly adopting renewable sources of energy not just to put an end to the existing pollution burden but also to limit their expenditure on electricity bills. In the latest addition, the temple authorities of Bhadrachalam Ramalayam temple located in Bhadrachalam of Telangana has roped in Hyderabad-based Sun Technologies for setting up solar power panels and curb the rising costs of energy bills of the temple. The temple authorities look for uninterrupted power supply for the coming 25 years. The temple authorities welcomed the proposal of Sun Technologies for installing solar panels to reduce the financial burden of the temple.

As far as the Bhadrachalam Ramalayam temple is concerned, it does not receive funds or grants from the Telangana government or even during the period of pandemic caused by Covid-19.  Currently, the temple authorities have to bear about Rs 6-7 lacs expense only for power consumption each month paying at a rate of Rs 9 per unit to TRANSCO. The pact signed with Sun Technologies holds that the solar power would cost only Rs 5.50 per unit to the firm.

V Ravindranath, Executive Engineer, Ramalayam, said that solar power will help authorities to save a minimum of Rs 2 lakh a month. He added, “Sun Technologies has already started work on erecting solar panels in cottages. Soon, the temple will also be supplied with uninterrupted solar power. The company will also take the responsibility for maintenance and supply of power for a period of 25 years.”

Recently, Modhera became the first village in the country that is powered round the clock by solar energy that also hosts the prestigious heritage site of Ancient Sun Temple.

Earlier this year, Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) or ‘Tirupati Temple’ in Andhra Pradesh decided to ink an agreement with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN) to commission solar PV projects in Tirumala and Tirupati. The Tirupati Temple mulls purchasing solar energy generated from these projects for at least 25 years.

The famous Akshardham Temple of Gandhinagar, Gujarat, had installed the first portable solar rooftop system at its complex in April with the support of German development agency Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).
