The ALMM (Approved List of Module Manufacturers) list for Indian domestic manufacturers has been updated by the ministry of new and renewable energy. The latest update lists 66 companies in total, including 8 new module manufacturers with a cumulative capacity of 3,976 MW. Overall capacity has risen to just over 18 GW now.

Rajasthan Electronics and Instruments, with a 23 MW capacity, Neety Euro Asia Solar Energy, with a 28 MW capacity, Shivam Photovoltaics, with a 30 MW capacity, Sahaj Solar, with a 100 MW capacity, and Raajratna Ventures, with a 96 MW capacity, are among the newcomers in the August-22 ALMM update. In addition to the aforementioned participants, Waaree Energies, RenewSys India, and Adani group’s Mundra Solar contributed more module capacities to the updated list, bringing their respective capacities to 2650 MW, 487 MW, and 562 MW.

Waaree incidentally has become the manufacturer with the highest rated solar module of 650Wp with M12 cells approved under ALMM.

The ALMM list (Approved List of Module Manufacturers) was introduced by the Ministry in 2019 to lower the dependency on imported solar modules. The list was updated at a time when solar module prices in the nation have gone higher.
According to a recent analysis by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) & others, supply chain issues and rising prices for raw materials like polysilicon have caused solar module prices to increase during the previous 18 to 20 months.

A non-tariff barrier to prevent imports of solar equipment from Chinese firms, which provide a major portion of the equipment for solar power projects, the ALMM list has steadfastly avoided any foreign based manufacturer so far. Open access and net metering projects were added to the ALMM’s (Approved List of Module Manufacturers) purview by revisions approved by the MNRE in January 2022.

Additionally, the government has developed a production-linked incentive (PLI) program for solar modules. Nirmala Sitharaman, the finance minister, included a total of Rs. 24,000 crores in PLI incentives for the production of solar modules in the union budget for FY23. The government first promised Rs. 4,500 crore incentives as part of the program.
