Telangana is one of the bright spots when it comes to the solar energy growth in the country. Now the Hyderabad metro has decided to install rooftop solar panels on 13 of its metro stations and depots with the help of Amp Energy India.

Hyderabad metro or L&T Metro Rail Limited has inked an agreement with Amp Energy India for the rooftop solar power development. The capacity contract is for 4 MW of solar energy. The metro venture is a public-private partnership between the state government of Telangana and Larsen & Toubro Ltd.

Currently Hyderabad Metro owns 66 stations in three corridors along with three Interchange Stations. Previously, Amp Energy has installed 7.8 MW of solar power that offers clean energy to 24 metro stations and two depots. Amp Energy had installed rooftop solar also at car parking areas of the metro.

With 4 MW to come up in near future through Amp Energy, the total capacity of Hyderabad metro coming from solar panels will be 11.8 MW which will be enough to support 15 per cent of the metro’s electricity consumption helping it decarbonise its operations and save money otherwise spent on power bills.

After the installation of 4MW of rooftop solar, the metro corporations’ 37 metro stations will be connected with green energy supplied by solar panels. Metro has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amp Energy under which it will procure solar power for 25 years. There will be generation of 11,300 MWh of green energy annually.

Recently, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said that it is constructing 27 elevated metro stations under Phase IV and it will install solar panels along with inverters and other necessary solar equipment to generate 10 MW of solar energy.

Similarly, Patna Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC) is also mulling to have all its buildings ‘green’ that will have solar panels installed on them.
