India’s electric vehicle (EV) market continued its ascent in 2025, recording total sales of 22.7 lakh units across all vehicle segments. This accounts for 8 percent of India’s total 2.82 crore vehicle sales, marking another milestone in the country’s transition toward sustainable mobility.
Uttar Pradesh Leads
Uttar Pradesh emerged as India’s top-performing state, registering over 4 lakh EV sales in 2025. The state’s robust adoption was primarily fueled by the booming electric three-wheeler (e3w) market.
Electric Two-Wheeler Market Dominates
The electric two-wheeler (e2w) segment represented the largest portion of EV sales, contributing 12.8 lakh units in 2025. This dominance reflects strong consumer preference for affordable, efficient, and low-maintenance electric mobility solutions.
Statewise, Maharashtra leads with over 2.16 lakh EV two wheelers sold in the year. Karnataka (1.7 lakh), tamil nadu (1.36 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (1.16 lakh), and Madhya Pradesh (0.98 lakh) followed in the segment.
e3W Sales by Key States
The state of Uttar Pradesh leads the country in overall EV sales, thanks to robust market for electric three wheelers segment. The state of Uttar Pradesh has a lion’s share of EV sales registered for three wheelers in India.
UP contributed 2.74 lakh unit share out of roughly 8 lakh of the country’s total. Other major states in the list include Bihar (0.94 lakh), Assam (0.8 lakh), West bengal (0.68 lakh), and Delhi (0.59 lakh), all below the 1 lakh mark.
e4w Market: Growing but Still Limited
The electric four-wheeler market, while showing consistent growth, remains smaller compared to 2W and 3W categories. India saw 1.87 lakh e4W sales in 2025, with Maharashtra once again at the forefront.
Maharashtra contributed 33,000 EV sales through the year. Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu are the next in line with 21,700, 19,500, and 16,700 registered electric car sales. This also shows the dominance of southern state when it comes to electric cars, with Delhi being the only Northern state in the list with about 15,800 e4w sales registered in the country in 2025.
EV Manufacturing Fueling the Growth
With new entrants in manufacturing business coming up in India, the market is getting flooded with new alternatives and is also resulting in the advancement of EV technology in the country, suiting the local needs.
For instance, India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for the automotive sector continued to strengthen local EV manufacturing. As of December 31, 2025, cumulative investments under the program reached INR 35,657 crore, while incentive disbursements totaled INR 2,322 crore.
These figures underline the scheme’s crucial role in scaling domestic production of Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT) components and vehicles, making India a competitive hub for EV manufacturing.
