Ministry of Heavy Industries Greenlights 7,432 EV Charging Stations Across India

In a major announcement that is set to transform the EV (electric vehicle) charging landscape of the country, the Ministry of Heavy Industries has given its nod for 7,432 EV charging stations. The charging stations will be set up by three Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). The announcement comes under the second phase of the FAME Scheme (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India).

The Ministry has greenlighted INR 800 crores as capital subsidy to three OMCs for the set up of the electric vehicle public charging stations will be distributed across all states and Union Territories.

This information was provided by the Minister of State for Heavy Industries Krishan Pal Gurjar.

Introduced in year 2015, the FAME Scheme gives major impetus to electric vehicle sector in India encompassing technological development, demand generation, pilot projects, and charging infrastructure. The second phase sees a budgetary allocation of INR 10,000 crores and spans a period of five years starting April 1, 2019.

The Scheme places an emphasis on the electrification of public transport, with a view to support 7,090 eBuses, 5 lakh electric three wheelers, 55,000 electric four-wheeler passenger cars, and 10 lakh electric two wheelers.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Heavy Industries, Krishan Pal Gurjar, in a written reply in Parliament stated that under FAME-II, subsidies of INR 5,228.00 crore were disbursed for the increased deployment of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in India. He also told the Lower House that under the scheme, a total of 11,53,079 EVs were sold till December 1, 2023.
