In a recent announcement, Canada will be making its first major acquisition of over 1,000 electric buses. This acquisition aspires to augment the network of electric public transit in Quebec’s eastern province.

As per Infrastructure Canada, the governments will be making an investment exceeding C$780 million ($585 million) and more than C$1.1 billion with a view to procure 1,229 e-buses for Quebec.

As per a statement, Canada can provide unprecedented financial impetus and will help realise the largest project for electric buses in North America. The funding will make it possible for ten Quebec-based public transportation firms to kick off the complete electrification of their fleet.

The government has set sights on supporting the purchase of 5,000 zero emission buses in the span of the next five years and this initiative is a major step in this direction.

To give a boost to local economy, the percentage of Canadian content in the call for tenders has been earmarked at 25 per cent. The final assembly will also take place in the country. The call for tenders that has been in discussion for some time now, is part of the Green Economy Plan.  As mandated by the Green Economy Plan envisioned by Quebec, all new vehicles that are acquired by public transit agencies and get government subsidies must be EVs. The mandate will apply at the outset of 2025. The plan boasts of a budget of $9 billion

The North American subsidiary of Volvo, Nova Bus will be looking into the supply of the buses that are to be delivered between 2025 and 2027. Last year, the LFSe+, a long-range, 100 percent battery-electric bus produced by Nova Bus had completed the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) bus testing program at the Altoona Bus Testing Center in Pennsylvania.
