Swappable battery infrastructure provider Bounce Infinity has partnered with Greaves Retail, the retail business division from Greaves Cotton, to provide battery swapping stations for its EV fleet to accelerate the adoption of affordable mobility with battery-as-a-service.

The battery swapping service will be for both electric 2-wheelers (Ampere) and 3-wheelers. The company has identified Bengaluru as the pilot city for this project.

“We plan to scale to 10 cities where each city has 300 swap stations in the initial phase, and we will gradually increase the density of the swap network. Our plan for consumers is to have a swap station within a km of where he/she is. We will initially cover the top cities which have been the focus area for us,” said Anil G, co-founder and COO of Bounce. It’s also setting up infrastructure in tier 2 cities.

The Bounce Infinity swapping stations work on similar principles to a fuel station. The stations will have charged and ready-to-go batteries for Greaves customers; that they can easily swap with their near-empty batteries in a few minutes.

Earlier this year, Bounce had committed $100 million for R&D, manufacturing and expansion of infrastructure across the country. “With many more OEMs coming on board and economies of scale, the solutions become cheaper,” he said. Bounce plans to cater to 1 million customers in the next 12 months.

The solution, which will largely be available at locations as diverse as residential complexes, petrol bunks, restaurants, cafes, co-living spaces, corporate offices and kirana stores that will power electric vehicles manufactured by Greaves.

Backed by marquee investors such as Accel, Accel US, Sequoia Capital India, Falcon Edge, Qualcomm and Omidyar Network, among others, Bounce had last December announced the launch of its consumer e-scooter and battery-swapping network under the brand name Bounce Infinity. The e-scooter Infinity E1 comes with the ‘battery-as-a-service’ option – the first-of-its-kind in the Indian market.
