Job Description

Role Summary/Purpose:

The Systems Simulation teams are devoted to Wind Turbine systems modeling, performance, loads analysis and control tuning for GE Onshore Wind LC New Products, Cost-out programs and Fleet support, with a strong focus on product optimization.

The Operability Manager leads the Operability team, reporting directly to the LC Systems Simulation Leader. Operability is defined as the ability to keep the Wind Turbine system in a safe and reliable functioning condition, according to pre-defined operational requirements, whilst maximizing the energy production and minimizing the mechanical loads by smart control tuning. Moreover, it must ensure turbine operation is compliant with local grid codes.

He/she manages and develops the team aligning to Business program needs with a strong focus on LCOE optimization. He/she works very closely with SVO, Performance and Systems managers, and links with the central control team to define new controller software development needs.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate accountability for functional and business objectives, centered on leading LC Operability team to achieve specific goals in operability assessment and optimization for LC GE new product introductions.
  • Maintain broad awareness of efforts within group to assure technical quality excellence and rigor, timely completion of work and reviews, appropriate use of resources, and responsiveness to customer/program needs. Manage the team resources adapting to the LC segment business needs, finding synergies with other functions, segments and central teams.
  • Provide solutions in the field of control/operability or system trade-off recommendations to optimize the cost of energy by reducing design driving loads and maximizing the energy capture.
  • Define roles and responsibilities for assigned personnel. Conduct performance appraisals and participate in salary planning. Promote professional growth through timely performance feedback, coaching and counseling.
  • Drive strategic initiatives and continuous improvement for the Operability function.
  • Lead the integration of new control algorithms that increase wind turbine performance, lower mechanical loading of the turbine, and ensure proper grid integration, while allowing the turbine to run with high availability. Acting as bridge between SVO-MLA-Performance teams.
  • Investigate and analyze complex controls issues occurring in the fleet of installed turbines and develop corrective actions.
  • Provide key wind turbine controls expertise through all phases of product development.
  • Collaborate with wind farm engineering team and provide solutions to enhance application space.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Master degree from an accredited university in Controls, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or similar.
  • In depth knowledge of control systems for wind turbines and control tuning for LCOE optimization.
  • Knowledge on aeroelasticity, system dynamics and loading assessment.
  • Knowledge of Wind turbine aero elastic simulations (Flex5, Bladed, Simpack, Hawc2, etc.).
  • Effective problem identification and solving ability.
  • Proven ability to work in a cross-functional and global environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, leading and influencing skills and a positive energy.
  • Significant of control tuning experience for Wind Turbines.
