True Power Limited has officially begun construction of a 1 GW solar panel manufacturing plant in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, marking a major milestone in the state’s clean energy ambitions. The True Power's INR 100 crore solar factory is said to be the first in Uttar Pradesh, and it will bolster domestic solar manufacturing once operational.
The groundbreaking ceremony (Bhumi Pujan) for the new plant was recently held, led by the company’s Managing Director, Hari Om Tiwari, and Director, Shiv Om Tiwari. Once operational, the facility will boast an annual manufacturing capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar panels.
A Boost for Uttar Pradesh’s Renewable Roadmap
This project comes at a crucial time as Uttar Pradesh targets 20,000 MW (20 GW) of renewable energy by 2027. True Power’s manufacturing unit is the first of its scale in the state and reflects a broader industrial shift toward green manufacturing hubs in tier-2 cities.
This follows a recent announcement by SAEL Industries, which committed INR 8,200 crore to build a 5 GW integrated solar cell and module facility in Greater Noida, highlighting a growing cluster of solar investments in Uttar Pradesh.
India’s Domestic Manufacturing Push
India has added over 110 GW of solar capacity so far, and solar continues to dominate the country’s renewable growth. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the solar sector accounted for over 85 percent of new renewable capacity additions between April 2024 and January 2025.
Historically, Indian solar deployment relied heavily on imports of modules and components. However, recent government interventions, including the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) policy, are incentivising a shift toward indigenous production. True Power’s 1 GW plant is one such response to these policy signals.
India’s Solar Growth Trajectory
According to a report by SolarPower Europe, India’s solar module manufacturing capacity is projected to reach 160 GW by 2030, with cell manufacturing scaling up to 120 GW, compared to 80 GW and 15 GW respectively in 2025.
To meet its ambitious renewable energy targets, India aims to add an additional 200 GW of solar capacity by 2030. Annual PV installations in the country surged by 145 percent to reach 30.7 GW in 2024 and are forecast to grow further by 21 percent to 37.3 GW in 2025.
