India Adds Record 21.9 GW of Solar and Wind in H1 2025

India has added a record 21.9 gigawatts (GW) of new solar and wind capacity in the first half of 2025, a sharp 82 percent increase over the 12 GW added during the same period last year, according to a new report by JMK Research and MNRE data.

The surge was driven by the commissioning of large-scale utility solar and wind projects across several states, reaffirming India’s accelerating shift towards clean energy. A key deadline in June, for 100% exemption from ISTS charges, which stands reduced to 75% now for a year, also drove a rush to get projects commissioned before June 30.

Solar Takes the Lead

Of the total capacity added, solar contributed approximately 18.5 GW — the highest-ever addition for any half-year period — with wind accounting for 3.4 GW. Rooftop solar installations also saw growth, adding 3 GW between January and June 2025, thanks in part to the government’s PM Surya Ghar Yojana.

MNRE’s official figures show that India’s total solar power capacity has now reached over 116.2 GW, while wind power stands at 51.6 GW, as of June 30, 2025. This brings the combined installed capacity of solar and wind to nearly 168 GW, accounting for a significant share of the country’s total 234 GW of renewable energy capacity (excluding large hydro).

Top Performing States

According to the latest MNRE data:

Rajasthan leads in solar capacity with over 31.9 GW, followed closely by Gujarat at 21.4 GW and Karnataka at 9.9 GW. In terms of wind, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat remain frontrunners, with 11.8 GW and 13.8 GW respectively.

Rajasthan, Gujarat Lead

Together, Rajasthan and Gujarat now account for more than 40 percent of the country’s total solar capacity.

Hybrid solar projects and KUSUM-linked off-grid solutions added a significant share in agrarian and semi-urban belts.

Several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh, witnessed steady rooftop solar and waste-to-energy growth.

Overall, India now has over 116 GW of solar capacity installed, sharing roughly 39 percent of all the renewable energy the country has added so far.
