Renewable energy firm Zelestra has signed a major supply agreement with Chinese technology provider Sungrow to deploy advanced battery storage systems for one of the largest battery energy storage projects in Latin America.

Under the deal, Sungrow will deliver its PowerTitan 2.0 liquid-cooled battery energy storage system (BESS) and MV power conversion units for the 1 GWh storage facility, part of the Aurora hybrid energy project in Tarapacá, northern Chile. The site also includes a 220 MWdc solar plant featuring Sungrow’s 1+X modular inverter.

Construction of the project is underway, with the BESS units scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2025. Once operational, the Aurora project is expected to generate 600 GWh of renewable electricity annually—enough to power around 200,000 Chilean homes.

Hybrid system

Zelestra is developing the hybrid system to supply Chilean energy firm Abastible with round-the-clock solar energy under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA). Abastible is one of the country’s leading players in the liquefied natural gas market and has been expanding its presence in electricity.

“With this major agreement, we have secured some of the most advanced BESS technology available to deliver one of the largest battery storage projects ever in Latin America,” said Leo Moreno, CEO of Zelestra. “This is a critical milestone for the Aurora project and for our customer Abastible.”

Jack Gu, Vice Chairman of Sungrow, described the collaboration as a key step in supporting Chile’s clean energy goals. “We are proud to partner with Zelestra on the Aurora project, delivering our PowerTitan 2.0 storage solution and PV inverters to one of the most significant hybrid projects in the region,” Gu said. “Together, we are unlocking the full potential of solar and storage to build a greener future.”

7GW Portfolio

Zelestra holds a portfolio of over 7 GW of renewable projects in Latin America, with 1.7 GW either contracted, under construction, or operational. Globally, the company has 29 GW in development across 13 countries. Backed by private equity firm EQT, Zelestra was recently ranked among the top 10 sellers of clean energy to corporate clients worldwide by BloombergNEF.

Sungrow, a global leader in clean power conversion, has installed 740 GW of power electronics globally. The company is the top global supplier of PV inverters and is ranked the most bankable energy storage provider, according to BloombergNEF.
