BYD has unveiled its latest innovation in utility-scale energy storage, introducing the “Haohan” DC battery energy storage system (BESS) at the International Digital Energy Expo in Shenzhen last week. With a 14.5 MWh single-unit capacity, Haohan sets a new benchmark in the energy storage industry, nearly doubling the current industry standard.

Breaking Capacity Records

According to BYD, Haohan achieves a minimum capacity of 14.5 MWh per unit, compared with today’s typical 6-7 MWh systems. Even in a standard 20-foot container, the system provides 10 MWh of storage, while offering a volumetric energy density of 233 kWh per cubic meter, a 51 percent increase over the industry average, the company claims.

The company said this leap in unit capacity is designed to deliver efficiency gains for large projects. For a 1 GWh storage facility, Haohan could cut the number of units needed by over half, reduce land requirements by one-third, and lower the total number of cells by 76 percent.

The system is also built with durability, safety, and adaptability in mind, ensuring it can meet the diverse requirements of utilities and renewable developers.

Competitive Landscape

The battery storage market has been booming with multiple technological breakthroughs. Earlier this month, Tesla launched its Megablock system with a combined capacity of 20 MWh across four Megapacks. Other competitors include Sungrow PowerTitan 3.0 (6.9 MWh per container) and CATL Tener Stack (9 MWh in a two-in-one stackable format).

With Haohan emerging at 14.5 MWh per unit, BYD has placed itself ahead in terms of single-unit capacity, potentially reshaping competitive dynamics in global storage markets.

As governments, developers, and utilities worldwide push for cleaner, more reliable grids, high-efficiency, large-capacity BESS systems are becoming increasingly critical.
