To Avoid Electrolyte Leakage

Wanxiang A123 said the new cells are designed to address electrolyte leakage and stability risks commonly associated with conventional lithium-ion batteries. In a 10-needle puncture test, the company said a 100 Ah semi-solid-state cell showed “no fire, no explosion, and no thermal propagation.”

At the system level, the Star River platform uses full immersion cooling to maintain cell temperature variation within 2°C under demanding operating conditions. The company said the design combines material-level stability with active thermal management to reduce the risk of thermal runaway and improve reliability in harsh environments.

The system is designed for more than 10,000 charge cycles at room temperature and over 7,000 cycles at 45°C, which Wanxiang A123 said represents a 40% improvement over typical industry performance. The company added that higher temperature resilience could reduce the levelised cost of energy by around 15%.

Multiple Applications

Wanxiang A123 said the platform targets multiple applications including data centres, outdoor installations and large-scale deployments. The system includes an 800 V HVDC architecture for data centres, IP68-rated outdoor cabinets, modular 5-ft containers for transport-constrained projects and 20-ft container systems equipped with multi-stage fire suppression and three-level battery management systems.
