Waaree Energies Powers up Pondicherry’s First Solar Power Project

Waaree Energies has commissioned a 10 MWp solar power project in Pondicherry, the first and only solar plant in the city, so far.

Waaree Energies, one of India’s leading solar manufacturers, has announced that it has commissioned a large-scale10 MWp solar power project in Pondicherry. This first and only solar plant in the city, the project will supply power to Pondicherry Electricity Grid and Pondicherry Electric Department. Financed by IREDA, the project has installed 37,920 Waaree Solar Modules and EPC has also been led by Waaree Energies. With an agreement under the LTOA scheme, Waaree has signed a 25 year-long Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Chemfab Alkalies.

This new project aids the government’s vision of making Pondicherry India’s pilot solar city with an aim to drive the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative.

The plant is expected to generate 17500000 kWh of solar electricity in a year bringing down power costs and thus relieving the tariff burden on households and ensuring a tremendous value proposition for industries located in the city. This will also power smaller towns and make green electricity accessible even to the remotest areas of Pondicherry. Additionally, it will make the South city carbon-neutral, which will facilitate and spur continued growth among segments largely in the tourism circuit.

Viren Doshi, Director, Waaree Energies said “we are honoured to be partnering with the Pondicherry Energy Department and the Pondicherry Electricity Grid to enable the union territory to build a solar efficient future. With India on the brink of a solar-powered revolution, this move will potentially contribute to the country’s vision of achieving 175 GW by 2022. Furthermore, it will propel the overall development of Pondicherry and also scale new heights in making solar a mainstream source of energy in the country. We will continue to be committed to providing high quality and cost-effective sustainable energy solutions to our country.”

Recently, the firm had also announced the commissioning of a 21 MWp ground-mounted solar project in Solapur, Maharashtra. The open-access project was executed for Maharashtra Seamless Ltd for captive consumption. The plant is developed to help MSL achieve its endeavor to go carbon neutral. Developed in the Swami Samarth solar park, Akkalkot District of Solapur the plant is expected to generate more than 35000 MWh power yearly. The plant has installed 63420 numbers of WAAREE 330 wp solar modules.
