Tripura issued a tender seeking EoI for developing a 50 MW / 200 MWh Standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) tender. The project will be set up at the 33 kV level in 5 MW / 20 MWh modules. Tripura has sought soft copy submission till March 9, 2025, and hard copy till March 12, 2025.

Through this EoI, Tripura aims to set up a BESS project support the energy demand, particularly during 17:30 hrs to 21:30 hrs, with an optimized energy portfolio. This will enable Tripura to store excess renewable energy generated in the state.  The project will include multiple 33 kV substations under the TSECL project, offering a maximum 4 hours discharge duration during peak time in non-solar hours; a minimum 1 hour continuous discharge. The EoI also aligns with Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), a Tripura Government enterprise, whose mandate is to plan, develop, own, and maintain the electricity distribution infrastructure across the region. The BESS will support the state's peak demand, which reached approximately 378 MW and is projected to exceed 690 MW by 2030, as per the 20th Electric Power Survey (EPS).

Through this tender, TSECL aims to manage increasing renewable energy integration and meet peak demand requirements by deploying BESS in a distributed configuration across Tripura. The project, planned for Agartala, aligns with TSECL’s objective of strengthening the grid across the state’s 10,492 sq. km area and adding 696.4 MVA of capacity.

Project Features & Scope

The project in Tripura will be distributed across various 33/11 kV substations. The project will have a tenure of 12 years or 15 years. It will have a charging arrangement that will be carried out during solar hours. This charging power may be provided either by TSECL or arranged by the developer.

TSECL invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from financially sound and technically competent agencies, developers, or BESS manufacturers with proven experience in the execution, operation, and maintenance of similar BESS projects.

The selected agency shall propose suitable implementation models, business structures, and deployment processes at strategic locations suitable for BESS operation at the 33 kV level. Post EOI evaluation, an appropriate implementation model will be selected by TSECL, and necessary actions will be taken accordingly.
