Trinasolar Leads Global Perovskite Solar Cell Patent Rankings By Manish Kumar/ Updated On Tue, May 13th, 2025 Trinasolar Leads Global Perovskite Solar Cell Patent Rankings TrinaSolar has secured the top spot in the Global Perovskite Solar Cell Invention Patent Ranking released by intellectual property research firm IPRdaily, with 481 patent applications filed globally. The Chinese solar technology firm also ranked second in both the global solar cell and module patent rankings and the TOPCon solar cell patent ranking, according to IPRdaily, which specializes in intellectual property analysis. The rankings are based on invention patents filed and published over the past 10 years, using keyword and classification filters, with duplicate application numbers consolidated. “TrinaSolar has always regarded technological innovation as its primary driving force,” said Gao Jifan, Chairman and CEO. “We will continue to advance R&D, intellectual property development, and industry standards to accelerate commercialization of perovskite-silicon tandem technologies and contribute to the global energy transition.” Perovskite solar cells Perovskite solar cells, considered a next-generation photovoltaic technology, offer higher efficiencies than conventional silicon-based cells and can be manufactured at lower cost due to low-temperature solution processing. TrinaSolar began investing in perovskite technology in 2014 and now leads globally with 481 related patent applications. The company has established a State Key Laboratory of PV Science and Technology with Fudan University in Shanghai and co-founded an Innovation Center for Next-Generation PV Technologies with over 10 industry partners. The firm is also developing crystalline silicon tandem solar cells and has broken multiple world records for efficiency and power output in 2024. TrinaSolar holds an exclusive license from Oxford PV to develop and commercialize perovskite-based technologies in mainland China, including sublicensing rights. IPRdaily noted that TOPCon technology remains dominant in the market and is a strong candidate for the bottom cell in tandem architectures. TrinaSolar has seen 82.78% of its TOPCon patent applications filed in the past three years, one of the fastest growth rates in the industry. About TrinaSolar Founded in 1997, TrinaSolar specializes in photovoltaic products, systems, and smart energy solutions. Its offerings include PV modules, solar power stations, energy storage, microgrid systems, and multi-energy technologies. Listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market in June 2020, TrinaSolar was the first firm in its sector to go public on the platform.
