Total Eren, Others Collaborate for Indonesian Wind Plus Storage Project

Indonesian power utility PLN (Persero) has collaborated with Total Eren SA in the construction of a 70 MW wind power plant  project in Tanah Laut, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. This is also the first renewable project in Indonesia equipped with a 10 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) technology.

Adaro Power and Pembangkitan Jawa Bali Investasi (PJBI) are also involved with Total Eren in the RE project. This collaboration was marked by the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement between the PLN and Total Eren, Adaro Power and PJBI.

The wind and BESS project is an innovation carried out by the PLN Group and Total Eren in overcoming the intermittent EBT generators. This project is expected to be a reference for other EBT projects in the future.

PLN Director Darmawan Prasodjo said, “Equipped with the latest technology, a 10 MWh Battery Energy Storage System , this PLTB is expected to be able to strengthen the electricity supply in the Kalimantan interconnection system and increase the utilization of wind energy potential in Indonesia, which reaches 155 Gigawatts (GW).”

In the first year of operation, the Tanah Laut project is expected to produce a total of 158 GWh of electricity and increase to 196 GWh in the second year and so on. Total Eren said that the use of new and renewable energy will also contribute to reducing CO2e emissions by 220,000 tons per year.

President Director of Adaro Power Dharma Djojonegoro said that this project is the first IPP project that the firm will build and it also shows its seriousness in continuing to develop various renewable energy sources that are reliable and affordable.

As per Total Eren, the construction phase of wind plus BESS Tanah Laut project is targeted to start in early 2024 and is expected to reach the Commercial Operation Date (COD) in 2025. After operating, the renewable energy project is expected to strengthen the supply of electricity in the Kalimantan interconnection system and increase the green energy mix in Indonesia.

PLN together with Total Eren, Adaro Power and PJBI realize that the partnership of various parties from within and outside the country is urgently needed to realize Indonesia’s commitment to achieving the expected energy mix target through accelerating the clean energy transition.
