Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu has directed the installation of solar power plants on all government buildings across the state.
In a video conference with district collectors, the Deputy CM instructed that solar plants be installed on all government offices, including parking areas and canteens. With collectorate buildings sharing similar layouts, uniform blueprints will be issued from Hyderabad, though district-specific proposals will also be considered.
Educational Institutions and Vacant Irrigation Lands in Focus
The solar adoption plan will extend to educational institutions, including government schools, junior and degree colleges, and higher education buildings. District collectors have been tasked with compiling detailed data on these facilities to support the rollout of the program.
Officials were also directed to identify large tracts of vacant land under the irrigation and roads and buildings departments that could be utilised for setting up solar projects.
Empowering Tribal Communities
A major focus of the meeting was the Indira Solar Girijana Vikasam scheme, designed to empower tribal communities by providing free solar pump sets on lands allotted under the Right of First Refusal (ROFR) Act.
Around 6.7 lakh acres in agency areas were distributed under the Act during the previous Congress government. The scheme, launched in the Achampet constituency under the Nallamala Declaration, will soon be expanded to select areas in Adilabad district.
Tight Deadlines and Coordination
The Deputy CM urged district officials to submit all required information within a week. Collectors were advised to liaise directly with the Principal Secretary for Energy and the CMDs of SPDCL, NPDCL, and REDCO for clarity and technical assistance.
The meeting was also attended by Social Welfare Minister Adluri Laxman Kumar, Principal Secretary for Energy Naveen Mittal, SPDCL CMD Musharraf Faruqui, and REDCO CMD Anila.
The state of Telangana has a total installed solar capacity of over 5 GW, with the ground-mounted solar contributing over 4360 MW capacity, around 87 percent of the total, as of July 31, 2025. The state also has over 630 MW of rooftop solar installed so far. A major push in Telangana’s renewable growth, NTPC recently expressed interest in investing INR 80,000 crore in solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects in the state.
