Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned a 198 MW wind energy project for Tata Steel under the group captive model in Karur, Tamil Nadu, marking one of the largest wind projects of its kind in the state.
Located in Karur, the project comprises 55 wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of 3.6 MW.
Generating around 31 million units of electricity annually, the project is expected to offset about 26,350 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.
Self-EPC execution model
A key feature of the project is its execution through a self-EPC (engineering, procurement and construction) model.
TPREL laid down the scope into multiple packages and executed them in-house, covering the balance of plant, civil works, engineering and construction, transmission lines, 33 kV systems and supervisory systems.
This approach, the official statement said, reduced reliance on original equipment manufacturers for execution.
Foundation work for the project was completed in 126 days, while installation of the wind turbine generators was achieved in 167 days.
The company described this as a record execution timeline for a project of this scale.
Portfolio Expansion
With the commissioning of the Karur project, TPREL’s total renewable utility capacity has reached 11.6 GW. Of this, 6.1 GW is operational, comprising 4.9 GW of solar and 1.2 GW of wind capacity, while 5.8 GW is under various stages of implementation. These projects are scheduled for completion over the next 6 to 24 months.
TPREL’s wind energy portfolio now exceeds 3.7 GW, with projects spread across Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
The Tata Power Company Limited has set a target of achieving 100 percent clean energy by 2045. It currently operates a diversified power portfolio spanning generation, transmission, distribution and manufacturing.
