Sungrow, a global provider of photovoltaic (PV) inverters and energy storage systems, has announced that all dynamic models of its inverters sold in Brazil have received official approval from Brazil’s National Electric System Operator (ONS), marking a key milestone in grid compliance and system reliability.
The firm said that the certification confirms that Sungrow's inverter models meet the strict modeling requirements for electromechanical and electromagnetic transients, ensuring accurate dynamic behavior during grid disturbances.
Blackout Threats
The development follows a nationwide blackout in August 2023 that exposed vulnerabilities in inverter-based renewable energy systems. In response, ONS launched a structured verification program—detailed in Report RAP 0012/2023—to assess inverter and power plant controller (PPC) models, focusing on dynamic performance in scenarios such as low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) and reactive power support.
Sungrow participated in a multi-stage evaluation process led by ONS. The validation included:
Level 1 (L1): Verification of Sungrow’s PSCAD-based electromagnetic transient model, using a semi-physical controller to align simulation results with hardware behavior.
Level 2 (L2): Development and cross-verification of an ANATEM model for electromechanical transients, ensuring consistency between both simulation environments.
Extensive Collaboration
The company said the process involved extensive collaboration with ONS and the deployment of local engineers, global R&D teams, and technical consultants to ensure full compliance with grid modeling standards.
“All Sungrow inverter types sold in Brazil—including central, string, and modular models—have passed the certification process,” the company said in a statement.
