European multi-technical services company SPIE has announced the signing of a European framework agreement with Tesla for the implementation of battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. The agreement, which is renewable every three years, applies to all SPIE subsidiaries across Europe with expertise in BESS installation.
The partnership expands on an already strong collaboration between SPIE and Tesla, supported by numerous completed and ongoing projects in Belgium, the Netherlands, and France.
Energy Storage in Europe
Under the new framework, SPIE will deploy Tesla’s Megapack technology across its European projects. The company’s role includes providing a full suite of high-value technical services: engineering, Balance of Plant (BoP) work, connection to high- and medium-voltage networks, installation of security, lighting, fire detection, and surveillance systems, and project commissioning.
This framework will also standardise legal and operational conditions for all European Megapack projects executed by SPIE. Initially, it encompasses activities in France and will create opportunities in markets such as Poland and Germany, where SPIE subsidiaries have demonstrated technical and operational expertise.
SPIE’s Track Record in Large-Scale BESS Projects
SPIE has established a strong position in the European energy storage market, with contribution made to several large-scale projects built with Tesla’s Megapack technology.
In Ville-sur-Haine, Belgium, SPIE is responsible for the installation of a 50 MW / 200 MWh battery system that includes 53 Tesla Megapacks.
In the Netherlands, SPIE is participating in the “Mufasa” project in Vlissingen, which is set to become the largest battery energy storage site in the country. The facility will comprise 372 Megapacks, providing a total capacity of 1.4 GWh, and will play a crucial role in supporting grid flexibility and managing renewable power fluctuations.
The company is also spearheading a major project in the Eure department of France, involving the installation of a 100 MW / 200 MWh BESS unit.
Tobias Zaers Business Development and Marketing Director at SPIE, said, "This agreement reflects the confidence that a key global player in the energy sector has placed in SPIE's technical skills and pan-European organisation. We have developed collaboration between our subsidiaries with the systematic sharing of experiences, which allows us to capitalise on our national expertise. By combining our industrial know-how, local presence and collective intelligence, we are actively contributing to building a more sustainable energy model that is based on reliability, performance and efficiency."
