India’s total electricity generation has increased, thanks to the addition of new fuel capacities. However, the Indian power generation landscape is slowly undergoing a transition. An analysis of monthly electricity generation in 2024 and 2025 reveals that the share of variable renewable energy in India’s total generation is scaling up.

As per the latest reports from the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), the share of thermal energy in India’s total power generation has come down in 2025. According to the latest CEA report, in the first half (H1) of FY26—from April to September—India produced a total of 962.53 billion units (BU) of electricity, compared to 952.58 BU during the same period in FY25, indicating a rise of 1 percent.

Thermal Sinks, RE Rises

On the other hand, the country’s energy mix has undergone more changes. For example, the total share of thermal power in overall generation during H1 FY25 stood at 72.45 percent (690.17 BU). In H1 FY26, its share dipped to 68.04 percent, showing negative growth.

Fate Of Wind Power

Similarly, the share of wind energy in H1 FY25 stood at 5.87 percent (55.89 BU), while in H1 FY26 it went up to 7.56 percent (72.74 BU). Overall, in the renewable energy sector, the share of large hybrid power projects also increased from 9.93 percent (94.58 BU) to 11.12 percent (107.17 BU).

The overall figures point to a shift in India’s electricity generation pattern, which appears to be moving gradually from a coal-based economy toward green energy. Higher installations, domestic availability of raw materials, and the rise in tenders—particularly those focused on firm renewable energy projects—seem to have accelerated the sector’s growth.
