The Solar Quest of J&K

Solar power projects are being implemented in Jammu and Kashmir expeditiously. The Energy Statistics India Report 2022 says that J&K has 1.1 lakh MW solar energy potential,  second to only Rajasthan.

Today, J&K has about 20 MWs of installed capacity of grid-connected solar power. Just recently, the J&K administration has allowed grid connected rooftop solar power projects on the government buildings that lie within the municipal limits of Jammu city This will be done by Jammu Smart City Ltd. (JSCL).

J&K has rich renewable resources and there are multiple microclimatic locations like Udhampur that have a sub-tropical climate. The plain geography like Jammu, Akhnoor, Samba and Kathua as more of a composite climatic zone. J&K receives excellent Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) which makes it a good location for solar power generation.

The Jammu & Kashmir Energy Development Agency (JAKEDA) of Department of Science & Technology is implementing a scheme for providing rooftop solar PV plants on subsidised rates. The J&K administration provides 40% subsidy to consumers for installing Solar PV rooftops under the scheme.
