Sarda Energy & Minerals Ltd (SEML) has announced the awarding of a Rs 150 crore contract to Gensol Engineering Ltd for the development of a 50-MW DC solar power plant in the state of Chhattisgarh.

In a regulatory filing before authorities, Sarda Energy & Minerals has declared that the purpose of this project is to fulfill the company’s captive energy needs for its production and mining facilities.

Sarda said that this decision reflects the company’s dedication to meeting its captive energy requirements through sustainable and renewable sources.

The comprehensive contract between Sarda and Gensol Engineering includes activities such as design engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the solar power plant. The projected timeline for completing the project is estimated to be between 6 to 9 months from the letter of intent’s signing, Sarda held in the filing.

Moreover, Gensol Engineering had recently secured a contract from Sarda Energy & Minerals for a 33MW AC solar power project in Chhattisgarh. The project was slated for Rs 139-crore. This project, designed for captive use at Sarda Energy’s Kharora plant, encompasses design, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the solar power facility. The anticipated completion time for this project is set at six months.

Sarda says that it is playing a major role in the Green Energy field. The company has installed two solar power systems of 100 KW each in Siltara to take the first step to use renewable solar energy in their plant premises and it is backing up the power plant. Sarda also has plans to come up with five100-Kw solar power systems in the same place.

Expansion Mode

Currently, Sarda & Minerals is operating an 81.5 MW thermal power facility at its Siltara plant. The energy generated is captively used in the company’s sponge iron, billet, ingot and ferro alloys plants.

The firm has planned for future expansion of an Integrated Steel Plant. Company also proposes to set up two 660 MW merchant thermal power plants in phases, in the state of Chhattisgarh. As per MNRE, the installed solar power capacity in the Chhattisgarh stood at 944-MW in 2022.
