The project has now started dispatching stored energy to Arizona Public Service (APS), the state’s largest electric utility. The development comes just in time to support the growing electricity demand during the summer season.

Strengthening Arizona’s Grid Reliability

Papago Storage is the first of three major projects developed by Recurrent Energy under tolling agreements with APS. Together, these projects will contribute 1,800 MWh of battery storage capacity and 150 MWac of solar generation.

Once all three are fully operational, they will be able to store and supply enough electricity to serve approximately 72,000 homes for four hours, while the associated solar generation will support around 24,000 homes annually.

“The Papago Storage project is part of our diverse and balanced energy mix, helping us continue to provide Arizona with top-tier reliability and affordable service,” said Derek Seaman, APS Director of Resource Acquisition. “With summer here, we are prepared to meet customer energy needs when they need it most.”

Kevin Thompson, Chair of the Arizona Corporation Commission, applauded the milestone, stating, “Bringing online one of our state’s largest battery storage projects during this critical time when energy demand is growing rapidly will help our utilities diversify Arizona’s energy resources and enhance reliability.”

Local Community and Economic Benefits

Beyond boosting grid stability, the Papago Storage facility contributes to the local community through tax revenues and social support. Through its Community CaRE Program, Recurrent Energy has made donations to the Harquahala Fire District and Arlington Elementary School in Maricopa County.

The project was constructed by Canadian Solar’s majority-owned subsidiary, e-STORAGE, which served as the turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction provider. e-STORAGE will also maintain the facility under a long-term service agreement.

Ismael Guerrero, CEO of Recurrent Energy, remarked, “The commissioning of Papago Storage marks a major milestone in our collaboration with APS to strengthen Arizona’s energy infrastructure.”

Recurrent Energy’s Global Footprint

Recurrent Energy has established itself as a key player in the global renewable energy sector, having developed and built around 12 GWp of solar projects and 6 GWh of energy storage projects across six continents.

As of March 31, 2025, the company’s development pipeline includes approximately 25 GWp of solar power and over 69 GWh of energy storage capacity.
