Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (POWERGRID), a Maharatna public sector undertaking, has completed a crucial inter-state transmission project designed to channel renewable energy from Rajasthan's expansive solar hubs into the national grid.
Through its wholly owned subsidiary, POWERGRID Bhadla Sikar Transmission Limited, the company fully commissioned the infrastructure strengthening scheme for the 8.1 GW Solar Energy Zones in Rajasthan under Phase II - Part E.
The notification confirming commercial operation arrived on January 16, 2026, following physical commissioning on January 14.
Project Specifications and Timeline
This transmission initiative, awarded via Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB), enhances grid connectivity specifically for Rajasthan's high-yield solar parks, including the globally renowned Bhadla-Sikar area.
The system's activation ensures seamless power evacuation from these 8.1 GW zones, addressing longstanding bottlenecks in integrating vast renewable capacities.
POWERGRID's regulatory filing to stock exchanges on January 16 highlights the project's timely execution.
Boost to India's Green Energy Corridor
The development plays a cornerstone role in India's green energy corridor, facilitating the transfer of solar power from Rajasthan's sun-drenched deserts to load centres across the country. By reinforcing grid stability for variable renewable inputs, it directly supports national decarbonization targets and the expansion of non-fossil fuel capacity.
This commissioning comes amid POWERGRID's active involvement in similar efforts, such as a recent win for a 3 GW renewable integration project in Karnataka, spanning sites at Davanagere (0.25 GW) and Bellary (2.75 GW).
India added a record 44.5 GW of renewable energy capacity in 2025 (till November 2025), nearly doubling its annual additions from a year earlier. The division includes: solar installed capacity of 132.85 GW as India added about 35 GW; wind reached 54 GW after a 5.82 GW Increase.
