As of June 30, 2025, Odisha’s total installed solar power capacity has reached 706.34 MW, Union Minister of State for New & Renewable Energy and Power Shripad Yesso Naik informed the Rajya Sabha.
According to the Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA), solar projects totalling 486.66 MW are currently under implementation across the state. However, several have been delayed due to bottlenecks in approvals for tree felling, vegetation clearance, and land acquisition.
Investments and Green Energy Vision
Over the past three years, Odisha has attracted investments worth over INR 5 trillion across manufacturing sectors. Of this, 14 percent has gone into green energy equipment and 8 percent into electric vehicles (EVs) and related components.
The state’s long-term plan, outlined in its “Odisha Vision 2036 & 2047” document, targets meeting 33 percent of its energy needs from renewables by 2036 and 50 percent by 2047. The government aims for 33 percent green power consumption in the industrial sector. It is also targeting over 50 percent electrification of agriculture and households through schemes like PM KUSUM and PM Surya Ghar.
Rooftop Solar and Subsidy Status
Naik also updated the Rajya Sabha on the Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Programme Phase II, launched in March 2019 and extended until March 2026. In February 2024, it was merged with the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which aims to equip one crore households with rooftop solar systems by 2026–27.
As of August 5, 2025, 1.67 million households have benefited under the scheme, with INR 9,280 crore disbursed as Central Financial Assistance (CFA).
Odisha Renewable Energy Targets for 2029-2047
Odisha plans to raise the share of renewable energy in its installed capacity from the current 18 percent to 36 percent by 2029, 60 percent by 2036, and 70 percent by 2047. The roadmap includes the development of at least three green energy zones for industries dependent on clean power, large-scale solar and wind parks in western Odisha, and the creation of over 75,000 green energy jobs.
These measures aim to make Odisha energy self-reliant and ensure that by 2047, at least 50 percent of electricity in the services sector comes from renewable sources.
