The NCRTC project features 28 solar panels of 550 Wp each, with a total plant capacity of 15.4 kWp spread over 70 metres of track length. It's expected to generate about 17,500 kWh of energy annually.
Removable Tracks
The announcement follows the Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) rolling out India’s first Removable Solar Panel in a pilot project at its premises in Varanasi as a part of Indian Railways.
The pilot project rolled out in August this year included a 70-metre project that features 28 solar panels generating up to 15 kW of electricity. These panels are not only durable and efficient but are also removable, allowing for maintenance and seasonal adaptation. The installation of these panels doesn’t require any land acquisition, as they are installed between the spaces of the tracks.
GM of Banaras Locomotive Works, Naresh Pal Singh, highlighted how BLW is moving towards energy-efficient practices and that 20% of the energy requirement in BLW is met through solar energy. The panels are expected to offer a lifespan of 25 years and will offer convenience in their removal as well as installation.
While the pilot has met with the usual skepticism in terms of practicality, there is little doubt that as long as learnings from the same are taken on board, there should be something to gain from this.
