In order to use clean energy for water pumping, street lights, treatment plants, hospitals, public health centres, administrative buildings, treatment plants, community centers and libraries the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will be using solar power to fulfill its energy demands in a year.

The annual saving of the NMC on its Rs 100 Crore yearly bill will be at around Rs 60 lakh. Ten zones have been chosen by the civic body to execute the project for which they would invite private agencies to take up the work.

From now it will take around four months to issue work orders and hand over the sites to start the work. It would be for the private companies to install solar panels and other infrastructure. In minimum time of 8 months the companies have to generate the power. Also they will operate and maintain the system for the period of 20 years.

All the money that is used in setting up the plants will be spent by the companies and the NMC will disburse the cash once these companies quote the rate.

There are around 2300 connections of street lights and the setting up of systems for all these connections will be the major highlight of the project overall.

Currently NMC has solar power systems installed on it main admin building and four zone offices. This comes under the rubric of central government’s Model Solar City Project. Although this was the pilot project which was a big success overall, however the government has changed the norms and now the civic body will be solely responsible for the projects.
