MNRE Launches ₹2.3 Cr Challenge for RT Solar Innovation By Junaid Shah/ Updated On Mon, Jun 23rd, 2025 Highlights : Start-Up Challenge for innovation in solar and distributed renewable energy systems initiative is supported by NISE, Startup India, and DPIIT The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has launched a first-of-its-kind national innovation competition, Innovative Projects Start-Up Challenge, with a prize pool of INR 2.3 crore to drive innovation in rooftop solar and distributed renewable energy systems across India. The announcement was made during the National Conference on Skill Development for the Renewable Energy Workforce, held at Atal Akshay Urja Bhawan in New Delhi. Targeting Innovation in Key Areas The challenge is open to Indian startups working across diverse sectors, including green technology, IoT, AI, blockchain, construction, energy hardware, fintech, and waste management. Entries must focus on one or more of the four themes – affordability, resilience, inclusivity, environmental sustainability. Shortlisted participants will compete for significant cash prizes. For the first prize, INR 1 crore is allocated. Similarly, INR 50 lakh for second, INR 30 lakh for third, and ten consolation prizes of INR 5 lakh each are other winning amounts. Along with financial support, winners will receive incubation, mentorship from industry experts, and pilot implementation opportunities. The initiative is being implemented with support from the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) and in coordination with Startup India and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). Applications can be submitted through the Startup India portal until 20th August. As of April 2025, the country’s total rooftop solar capacity surpassed 17 GW, with Gujarat leading at 5.1 GW, followed by Maharashtra (3.2 GW), Rajasthan (1.5 GW), Kerala (1.1 GW), and Tamil Nadu (0.93 GW). The MNRE’s latest startup-focused initiative is expected to further energise the sector as India works toward achieving its 2030 renewable energy targets. The National Conference on Skill Development for Renewable Energy Workforce by MNRE is a platform facilitating dialogue between government, industry, and training institutions on scalable, inclusive, and industry-aligned skilling strategies. It brings together policymakers, corporate leaders, HR heads, state officials, and skilling experts to deliberate on practical solutions for expanding workforce capacity across key areas such as solar, wind, battery storage, and green hydrogen. It is organized in collaboration with the National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI).
