Wind Energy in India

According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, India currently has the fourth highest wind installed capacity in the world with total installed capacity. In March 2021, India had installed capacity of 39.25 GW and had generated around 60.149 Billion Units in the previous year.

The total wind energy potential in the country at 100m height stands over 302 GW and at 120m, the potential rises to about 695 GW. Maharashtra, which is one of the seven windy states in India, too has a reasonable potential of about 45 GW and 100 GW at 100m and 120m respectively.

The recent data released by MNRE, India had added nearly 275 MW of fresh wind energy in the first three months of 2022. This is actually a 30 per cent increase when compared with the fourth quarter of 2021. Maharashtra, along with Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka, continue to be the primary markets for the wind based energy. The four states make about 72 per cent of all additions.

The Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) has come up with its Global Wind Report 2022 in which it has said that India’s wind market will grow at 3.2GW and 4.1GW in 2022 and 2023 respectively.
