Madhya Pradesh Will Solarise All Govt Buildings By 2025, Says CM

Madhya Pradesh (MP) is set to equip all its government buildings with rooftop solar panels by the end of 2025, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said. He announced the decision at the Surya Mitra Krishi Feeder Summit held in Bhopal. The move is part of the state’s wider plan to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy and reduce dependence on conventional sources.

The move comes after several states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and others have planned to boost the deployment of rooftop solar on government buildings. This has become significant for several land-locked states to boost their renewable energy portfolio and also for the state utilities to comply with the Renewable Energy Purchase Obligations (RPOs). States like UP have also tried to rope in RESCO model and the hybrid rooftop solar plans to offer tailor-made rooftop solar solutions to different areas of the state to counter the issue of capital needs and grid fluctuations.

Investment Worth Rs 20,000 cr Committed

The event also witnessed the commitment of industries to boosting clean energy investments in the state. CM Yadav highlighted the enthusiastic participation of over 350 investors from across the country and the state, speaking at the ‘Surya Mitra Krishi Feeder Yojana’ Summit in Bhopal. As a result, an investment of more than INR 20,000 crore is expected in the sector.

Highlighting the state’s progress, CM Yadav said that the energy department aims to add 3.2 million new electricity connections shortly. He also noted that while 3 million farmers currently have permanent electricity connections, another 200,000 continue to rely on temporary access.

Eliminating Bills For Farmers

The Chief Minister stressed that the government’s long-term goal is to eliminate electricity bills for farmers, redirecting subsidy spending toward infrastructure and development.

Yadav also underscored the economic appeal of solar energy, noting that many investors are now willing to contribute INR 85 lakh per megawatt, moving away from the earlier reliance on INR 1.05 crore subsidies. He added that solar installations offer the dual advantage of clean energy and productive land use beneath the panels.

Madhya Pradesh’s renewable sector is rapidly expanding, with over 9,300 megawatts of operational solar capacity—15 times higher than in earlier years. Upcoming investments in MP include 22 solar plants in Narmadapuram district’s Mohasa-Babai area, with a combined outlay of INR 18,000 crore. The floating energy park in Maheshwar and large solar projects in Neemuch and Rewa are other notable achievements. Meanwhile, Sanchi is set to become the state’s first designated solar city.

Encouraging Smaller Investors

State Renewable Energy Minister Rakesh Shukla added that MP is taking a unique approach by encouraging smaller investors, including farmers, to participate in solar power generation—unlike other states that focus primarily on large-scale developers.

The Surya Mitra Krishi Feeder Yojana initiative aims to provide farmers with affordable daytime power, reducing the state’s reliance on coal-based electricity. Through this scheme, small-scale solar developers—including farmers—can bid for projects and contribute to decentralised energy production.

Notably, Madhya Pradesh is among the leading states in the agricultural sector, with approximately 8,000 separate agricultural feeders and around 3.5 million agricultural pumps for irrigation. To further support the sector, the state is offering a 3 percent interest rebate for seven years under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund, specifically for solar-related projects.
