Luminous Sees BESS Portfolio Driving Next Phase of Growth Photograph: (Luminous)
Indian energy solutions company Luminous Power Technologies is looking to the battery energy storage system (BESS) segment as a key driver of its next phase of growth, as the company expands its portfolio of solar and energy storage solutions for residential and small commercial consumers.
Speaking at Intersolar India in Gandhinagar, Ganesh Moorthi, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Luminous, said the company has recently introduced small-scale BESS solutions ranging from 25 kWh to 100 kWh, targeting distributed energy applications.
“We have launched storage solutions starting from 25 kWh, 35 kWh, 80 kWh and 100 kWh. Right now we are exploring the market and assessing how customers are adapting to these solutions,” Moorthi said.
Reducing Fossil Fuel Demand
The company believes diesel generator (DG) replacement in the small commercial segment could emerge as a major opportunity for battery storage adoption in India.
“DG replacement is a very strong use case for energy storage. Compared to diesel generators, battery systems require significantly less space, offer higher efficiency and eliminate pollution and noise,” he noted.
Alongside storage solutions, Luminous showcased its broader solar portfolio at the event, including single-phase and three-phase hybrid inverters, on-grid inverters, batteries and solar modules designed for residential and small business applications.
Adoption of Hybrid Inverters
According to Moorthi, the growing penetration of solar power is expected to accelerate the adoption of hybrid inverter technologies, which combine solar generation with energy storage.
“Hybrid inverters are a natural progression from on-grid systems. As solar penetration increases, the need for storage and grid-support solutions becomes more important,” he said.
While the company is exploring opportunities in energy storage, Moorthi said its current focus remains on smaller BESS deployments, with larger utility-scale storage solutions still in the exploration phase.
Maintaining Legacy
With over 37 years of experience in the Indian power backup and energy solutions market, Luminous continues to design products specifically suited to India’s varied grid and environmental conditions.
The company is also expanding its digital and e-commerce channels, with several residential energy solutions now available through online platforms as demand for solar and backup power systems grows among consumers.
