KP Group has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Botswana to invest about $4 billion (₹36,000 crore) in renewable energy generation, storage and transmission infrastructure, the company said.

Under the agreement, KP Group and Botswana’s Ministry of Minerals and Energy will jointly develop renewable energy and associated transmission projects aimed at raising Botswana’s clean power capacity to nearly 5 gigawatts (GW). The projects will include the construction of new renewable energy plants as well as upgrades and expansion of high-voltage transmission lines to enable regional power exports, the company said.

President-Level MoU

The MoU was signed following a recent visit by Indian President Droupadi Murmu to Botswana and is part of Botswana’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and move towards its goal of becoming a net-zero country by 2030.

KP Group, which includes KPI Green Energy Ltd, KP Energy Ltd and KP Green Engineering Ltd, said it would lead technical and commercial development activities, including feasibility studies, project design, financing, construction, commissioning and long-term operation and maintenance of the assets.

As part of the agreement, KP Group will also support 30 scholarships annually for citizens of Botswana to pursue education and skill development in renewable energy, engineering and sustainability-related fields.

Expanding Horizons 

“This memorandum marks an important step in Botswana’s transition towards a sustainable and secure energy future,” Botswana’s Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, said in a statement, adding that the partnership would help strengthen regional power connectivity and local capacity building.

KP Group’s founding promoter Faruk G. Patel said the company aims to support Botswana’s renewable energy ambitions while enabling regional exports of clean power.

KP Group currently has a renewable energy portfolio of about6 GW in India and is targeting 10 GW by 2030. The company is also expanding into areas such as green hydrogen and ammonia, battery energy storage systems, and offshore and floating solar projects.
