Karnataka has cemented its position as India’s top wind energy performer by adding a record 1,331.48 MW of wind power capacity in the financial year 2024-25. The achievement was formally recognised during the Global Wind Day 2025 celebrations held in Bengaluru on Sunday under the theme “Pawan-Urja: Powering the Future of India.”

Energy Minister KJ George received the national honour from Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi, acknowledging Karnataka’s leadership in clean energy initiatives. With this, the state’s cumulative installed wind capacity has reached 7,351 MW.

“This milestone reflects Karnataka’s deep commitment to clean energy and sustainable growth,” said George. “Our policies, execution capacity, and innovation-led approach are bearing fruit.”

Karnataka’s achievement aligns with its Renewable Energy Policy 2022–2027, which promotes innovation, repowering of ageing turbines, and digitalisation. The state has pledged its support for India’s national renewable energy target of 500 GW by 2030, with wind expected to contribute 100 GW to that total.

To accelerate this journey, Karnataka plans to implement 17 GW of new wind projects, of which over 5 GW will fall under the Renewable Energy Cluster Programme. Infrastructure upgrades are also underway, including 20+ substations, 400 kV transmission corridors, and a dedicated Renewable Energy Reserve Zone.

India’s National Push for Wind Energy

Union Minister Joshi underscored the country’s global standing as the world’s fourth-largest wind power generator with an installed capacity of 51.5 GW. “Wind energy is central to India’s green future,” he stated.

He outlined five key national priorities to boost India’s wind sector: expanding into new states like Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha; launching the offshore wind segment with 4 GW of leasing areas in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu; integrating wind with solar and storage to provide round-the-clock green power; modernising the grid with AI-based forecasting tools; and strengthening domestic manufacturing across the entire wind energy value chain.

This year, the renewable energy budget has risen by 53 percent to INR 26,549 crore, with a significant share earmarked for wind energy development.

Celebrating Momentum on Global Wind Day

The Global Wind Day event saw participation from state and central authorities, wind industry leaders, DISCOMs, and think tanks. Reports on the Wind Energy Roadmap and Manufacturing Roadmap were unveiled to chart India's future course.

While Karnataka got ranked the best-performing state, Tamil Nadu (1,136.37 MW) and Gujarat (954.76 MW) followed, reflecting the growing momentum in India’s wind energy transition.
