Iran Conflict Signals Why India Must Accelerate the Clean Energy Shift Photograph: (Samuel Wölfl)
The escalating tensions and rising geopolitical conflict involving Iran, Israel and the United States are drawing attention to the rising importance of accelerating India’s clean energy transition. Policymakers, researchers and analysts warn that geopolitical shocks could ripple through energy supply chains and trade.
India has been rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity and domestic manufacturing to reduce exposure to external disruptions. Analysts say the latest developments in West Asia reinforce the need to strengthen those efforts as global energy and technology supply chains remain vulnerable to conflict.
Aarti Khosla, Director at Climate Trends, said the unfolding situation underscores why India must continue pushing towards energy independence through clean technologies.
“The recent strikes only reinforce the validity of India’s long-standing principle of strategic autonomy,” she said. “In an increasingly volatile West Asian landscape, accelerating clean energy deployment becomes essential for energy security. Reducing dependence on imported conventional energy sources is now a strategic necessity.”
Shipping Disruptions & Hiked Insurance Costs
While immediate concerns centre on shipping disruptions and higher insurance costs for vessels operating near the Strait of Hormuz, experts say the broader implications extend to sectors tied to the energy transition, including renewable equipment and critical minerals.
Supply chains supporting solar, battery manufacturing and electric mobility rely heavily on global shipping routes that pass through the region. Any prolonged disruption could tighten logistics and raise costs for energy transition technologies.
“Much depends on how long the conflict endures and whether risks to the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz persist,” said Vivek Y. Kelkar, a researcher working at the intersection of geo-economics and sustainability.
“For India, the impact would be indirect but significant. Rising global energy prices and tighter trade flows can pressure the economy and complicate energy planning,” he said.
Scaling RE Capacities
India has been attempting to insulate itself from external shocks by scaling domestic renewable capacity, expanding electrification and diversifying energy partnerships.
Vaibhav Chaturvedi, Senior Fellow at the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), said geopolitical volatility should push countries to accelerate structural changes in their energy systems.
“This is a moment to ramp up investments in electrification of the power and transport sectors,” he said. “Over the long term, that remains the most durable pathway to energy security.”
Middle East-Key For Emerging RE Sources
The Middle East has also become an important partner for India in emerging clean energy sectors such as green hydrogen, critical minerals and renewable investments. Any escalation in regional instability could affect trade routes, investment flows and technology partnerships linked to these sectors.
Archana Chaudhary, Associate Director at Climate Trends, said the situation presents both risks and strategic signals for India.
“The conflict raises risks to supply chains and tests energy security,” she said. “But it also reinforces the need to strengthen domestic capabilities and reduce exposure to external shocks.”
Energy analysts say the broader takeaway for India is that geopolitical disruptions increasingly intersect with climate and energy policy. Strengthening domestic manufacturing, expanding renewables and accelerating electrification are likely to become even more central to India’s strategy as global uncertainties grow.
“India cannot remain hostage to geopolitical volatility,” said Duttatreya Das, Asia energy analyst at Ember. “Moments like these are opportunities to accelerate electrification and reshape the energy system toward greater resilience.”
