The Maryland-based company said its multilayer “Cornerstone” cells are designed for potential use in smartphones, laptops, wearables and other compact devices, offering long cycle life, improved safety and no swelling without bulky compression systems.

“This milestone powers the most expansive solid-state sampling programs in the industry,” chief executive Jorge Diaz Schneider said, adding that the company is targeting consumer electronics, electric vehicles, aerospace and defense markets.

Fully Functional Cells

ION said it is the only solid-state battery firm currently delivering fully functional cells for integration and testing in real-world consumer electronics. The shipments mark the first stage in a qualification process that could lead to commercial deployment.

Earlier this year, the company reported a 25-fold increase in cell capacity while maintaining more than 1,000 charge cycles in a commercially relevant format, without external compression or volume change.

Founded in Maryland, ION Storage Systems develops solid-state battery technology for portable electronics, electric vehicles and stationary energy storage applications.
