Indonesia Inaugurates Nation’s Largest Solar Panel Factory

Indonesia has taken a major step toward strengthening its renewable energy sector with the inauguration of the country’s largest integrated solar cell and panel manufacturing facility. PT Trina Mas Agra Indonesia, the new plant, boasts a production capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) annually and delivers solar panels with an output of 720 watts-peak per unit.

A Strategic Move to Build Green Industry Ecosystems

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita officially opened the facility on Thursday at the Kendal Industrial Estate in Central Java. Speaking at the event, he emphasised the strategic importance of co-locating solar cell and panel production, calling it a “key effort to build an integrated ecosystem for renewable energy industries in Indonesia.”

Kartasasmita noted that such facilities are essential to Indonesia’s clean energy roadmap, particularly in reducing dependency on imported modules and developing local capabilities in green manufacturing. “Now our homework is to make our local solar panel products more competitive than imported products,” he said, addressing the long-term ambition of self-reliance in energy technology.

Supporting Indonesia’s Renewable Energy Targets

Indonesia has set an ambitious target to source 52.8 GW of power from renewable sources between 2025 and 2034. Of this, 17.1 GW is expected to come from solar power. The new facility by Trina Mas Agra Indonesia directly contributes to this goal by increasing domestic production capacity and reducing project reliance on overseas imports.

Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita added that the government envisions the solar panel industry evolving beyond a technology supplier role - to become a driver of economic sovereignty in clean energy and job creation.

The new solar manufacturing facility is not an isolated development for Indonesia. It follows on the heels of another major renewable milestone - the launch of Indonesia’s first ocean current power plant. These back-to-back advancements underscore the country’s broader strategy to diversify its clean energy mix and accelerate decarbonisation.
