India's solar module manufacturing capacity has more than doubled in the past year. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced on Tuesday (January 6, 2026). Solar module production tracked by the government expanded 128.6 percent year-over-year, reaching 144 gigawatts (GW) in 2025 - a dramatic increase from 63 GW in 2024.
The figures indicate that India added approximately 81 GW of new module manufacturing capacity over the year. Since 2014, the nation’s solar manufacturing base has grown over 62 times, rising from a mere 2.3 GW to its current 144 GW, underscoring the rapid pace of domestic clean energy industrialization. With the country already on its way to the next big move on backward integration with a possible cell manufacturing capacity of 50 GW by 2026 end, the next big challenge to keep the momentum growing sustainably is already being weighed by the government.
Government Measures Driving Growth
Government interventions have played a decisive role in accelerating India’s solar manufacturing expansion. The implementation of the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) initially provided strong impetus by ensuring quality control and promoting domestic module production.
To further reduce dependence on imported solar cells, the government has recently extended its reforms to include cell-level manufacturing. The newly introduced Approved List of Cell Manufacturers (ALCM) will mandate that all ALMM-listed modules use domestically produced solar cells starting June 2026.
Seeing the success of the ALMM approach, the government is already planning for a similar approach for wafers by 2028, and eventually, polysilicon by 2030 or earlier. Each succeeding step is more challenging, but with the knowledge of knowing that much has been achieved earlier, there is a renewed confidence about the possiilities.
